With the ingress of digitization in our everyday lives, digital and cybercrime are proliferating at an alarming rate. A survey (Do you know that we are at ‘unreported’ high risk now?? ) conducted recently showed that India is ranked third among other countries globally where most of the threats were detected. And do you know that we are at unreported high risk now. According to the National Crimes Record Bureau, 4,231 cyber-crimes were registered under the IT Act and cyber-crime-related sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) during 2009-11. A total of 1,184 people were arrested under the IT Act for cyber-crimes, while 446 people were arrested under IPC sections. At least 157 cases were registered for hacking under the IT Act in 2011, while 65 people were arrested.
Although a very large number of cyber-crimes probably go unreported, these statistics give us some idea about prevalence of cyber-crime in the country. This is making cyber forensics increasingly relevant in today’s India. Our country at this time is facing different challenges concerning cyber-attacks and digital crimes. As our individual and professional lives changed to virtual domains, we become targets for cyber criminals and we should know that we are at ‘unreported’ high risk now. It is mandatory to be aware about the risks associated and preventive measures. In next few years, India will require millions of Cyber Security Professionals to keep the people, organizations and even the economy of India, safe and protected against these high-tech crimes.
